What they like

People, crumbs and places where nobody chases them away. Roofs, bridges, stations, farm barns: if there's a ledge, it's fine. Don't give them a mountain of bread. Better: leave some rough patches and seed-bearers in the park, yard or field edge. Think dandelion, plantain, yarrow, shepherd's‑purse. Put out a shallow water dish and refresh it. And in the city: leave a corner of tiles loose. Green attracts seeds and insects, and that's really better food.

Ecological importance

He cleans up spilled grain and seeds and is themself prey. Peregrine, goshawk — and sometimes the peregrine in the centre? There's a good chance they'll target pigeons. Fewer pigeons often also means fewer raptors nearby.
